Cabo San Lucas is beautiful. Really. The arch at Land’s End is stunning. The fishing is world-class. And some people genuinely prefer it.
But here is the truth most websites won’t tell you: Puerto Vallarta and Cabo are completely different trips.
One is not “better.” They just fit different people. So let me walk you through the real differences. By the end, you will know exactly which one feels right.
First, the Vibe Check
Puerto Vallarta feels like a real Mexican town. Because it is one. People live here. Families have run their shops here for generations. You walk on cobblestone streets. You hear roosters in the morning. You smell tortillas cooking.
Cabo feels like a resort playground. Everything is built for tourists. That works great if you want easy and predictable. But it does not feel like old Mexico.
I have had guests cry when they leave my villa. Not because of me. Because they fell in love with the feeling here. Cabo does not do that to people.
Verdict so far: Puerto Vallarta for soul. Cabo for convenience.
Beaches: This One Is Not Close
Let me be direct. Cabo’s beaches look incredible in photos. And they are. For looking.
But swimming? Dangerous on most of them. Pacific side has strong rip currents. Medano Beach is the only safe swimmable beach near town. And it gets packed.
Puerto Vallarta sits inside Banderas Bay. The bay protects us. So our water is calm. You can actually swim without fearing for your life.
And here is something most people do not know: The best beaches in Puerto Vallarta are south of town. Quiet coves like Playa Aguacate. That is where Villa La Mansión sits. You walk from your room right into swimmable water. No crowds. No jet skis buzzing you.
I have watched dads teach their kids to snorkel here. Couples float on their backs and stare at the sky. That does not happen in Cabo.

Nightlife: Depends on Your Age (Be Honest)
Cabo wins nightlife. I will admit that.
If you want to party until sunrise, take shots out of a plastic tube, and wake up not knowing where your shoes went – go to Cabo. Cabo Wabo. El Squid Roe. It is a scene.
Puerto Vallarta has nightlife too. But different. We have beach bars with live music. Chill places where you drink a mezcal and watch the sunset. The Zona Romántica has fun LGBTQ+ clubs. But everything closes by midnight or 1 AM.
I am 40-something. I like a good drink and good conversation. That is Puerto Vallarta. If you are 22 and single, honestly? Go to Cabo.
Winner: Cabo for party animals. Puerto Vallarta for everyone else.
Food: Not Even a Competition
I love Cabo. But the food there frustrates me.
You can find good restaurants. Expensive ones. But cheap, authentic street food? Harder to find. Cabo caters to American tastes. Lots of burgers and fries.
Puerto Vallarta is a food city. Real food. Street carts selling tacos al pastor for 15 pesos. A lady making fresh tortillas by hand. Seafood markets where you pick your fish and they grill it right there.
I take my guests to a taco stand called Pancho’s. No sign. Just a grill and a line of locals. Best al pastor of your life. Costs $2 for three tacos.
You will not find that in Cabo.
Winner: Puerto Vallarta.
Weather: Cabo Wins This One Fairly
I have to be honest. Cabo has better weather on paper.
Less rain. Almost never cloudy. If you want guaranteed sun every single day, Cabo delivers.
Puerto Vallarta has a rainy season from June to October. Afternoon showers. Humid. But here is the secret: The rain lasts an hour. Then the sun comes out. Everything turns green and gorgeous.
Winter here is perfect. November to May – sunny, 75-80°F, no humidity.
So it depends. Want bone-dry desert heat? Cabo. Want green jungles and occasional rain? Puerto Vallarta.
Winner: Cabo for dry guarantee. Puerto Vallarta for beauty.
Weddings and Events: Why People Choose My Villa
I host weddings at Villa La Mansión. So I see this comparison every week.
Cabo has big resorts. They handle everything. But you share your wedding with 500 other tourists. The wind picks up in the afternoon. Brides get annoyed fixing their hair.
Puerto Vallarta has private villas. Like mine. You get the whole place. Your ceremony on the lawn. Dinner under the stars. The beach to yourselves. No strangers walking through your photos.
Plus – and this matters – Cabo gets HOT. Like 95 degrees hot. Your guests will sweat through their suits. Puerto Vallarta stays milder because of the bay.

Getting Around: Walking vs Driving
Cabo is spread out. You need a car or expensive Ubers. The airport is 45 minutes from downtown. Most hotels are scattered along a highway.
Puerto Vallarta is walkable. The malecón (boardwalk) runs for miles. You can walk from the Romantic Zone to the marina easily. Buses cost 10 pesos. Ubers are cheap.
My villa is south of town – a 15-minute drive. Quiet but close enough to everything.
